Zebulon, created as part of an act passed by the legislature in November, 1825, is named for Zebulon Montgomery Pike. Zebulon Pike had many accomplishments during his lifetime, some of which included discovering Pike’s Peak (which bears his name) and was part of the expedition that was sent to explore the Louisiana Purchase. Congress honored him with ranks of captain, major, and colonel, and in the War of 1812 he attained the rank of brigadier-general.
Today the City of Zebulon is a city of 1,100, offering a dozen retail spots, several restaurants and a gorgeous, historic Courthouse Square. We’re creating places that make Zebulon a great place to live—and play. We are also creating places that draw new businesses—and new jobs. Around the newly-renovated and landscaped 1895 Courthouse, we boast an award-winning BBQ joint, an independent bookstore that draws folks from a 50-mile radius, a great eyeglass shop, a local paper and a high-style woman’s clothing store.
The city has completed two Streetscape projects, which played an important role in the revitalization of the downtown district, and will soon begin our third one. The community has also come together in an attempt to restore the old Zebulon School by donating approximately $130,000 in seed money toward the project.
We are also working with our local Arts council and other community non-profits to nurture our “creative economy” both to keep our business revenue healthy and our kids (and adults) engaged and interacting with each other. The City also plans to launch its new, first-ever website in late October, 2017.
We welcome over 500 visitors every year who come to see world-class fine art photography at SlowExposures—a Governor’s Award-winning festival that celebrates the Rural South. We have received grants to paint wall murals depicting our agricultural heritage and we’re just about to being a project that will feature large-scale photographs from SlowExposures on the back walls of our south side commercial buildings. The City has also recently completed additions to the Zebulon City Park with amenities that will draw our citizens to take advantage of swings, a walking trail, covered picnic and cook-out areas.
Welcome to Zebulon-a great place to work, play and live!
